Dunn's Castle in Piketberg

Heading home at the beginning of January from our family holiday, we stopped in at Dunn's Castle in Piketberg, which has sweeping views of the Swartland region. The castle was built in 1902 and originally belonged to George Herbert Dunn. Famous guests such as Cecil John Rhodes, Rudyard Kipling and Herbert Baker were regular visitors. Sir Herbert Baker was a good friend of Dunn and it's believed that he was the castle’s architect. Today it is a guesthouse and conference centre. We didn't see the rooms, but we did go inside for some light refreshments.

Kitesurfing in Langebaan

Langebaan is on South Africa's West Coast, near Britannia Bay where my in-laws live. It's a popular destination for kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding. All the colorful kites against the blue sky make for great photos. It's an extreme sport, so you have to be really fit. It must be exhilarating, especially for those who lift off and "fly" a bit before coming back down. Some of them get really high up too!

The Estuary and Bokkomlaan at Velddrif

We always enjoy taking a drive to Velddrif whenever we're visiting my in-laws on South Africa's West Coast. Velddrif is a small fishing town with an estuary teeming with birds on the Berg River. We also drove along Bokkomlaan, a road named after the salted, dried fish (mullet) known as bokkoms. Bokkomlaan has been declared a heritage site with its historical bokkom industry. Gin Distillery and Charlie's Restaurant

While staying with my in-laws on South Africa's West Coast over the Christmas holiday, we went to Port Owen Marina in Velddrif. Some of us did a gin tasting at the Poetic License Distillery and then all of us had lunch next door at Charlie's Brewhouse. We also popped in at the gift shop where you can buy Poetic License gins and Simply Bee products, among other things. We had a great time and everything was fabulous!

House Hunting Near the Beach

Do you enjoy watching house hunting shows? I do, especially homes near the beach with a view. My in-laws own such a home in Britannia Bay, so it's always a real treat when we visit them for the holidays. This time we did some house hunting ourselves. My father-in-law showed us a few homes that were in walking distance to the beach. House 1 has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. House 2 has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a loft and balcony with a view of the water. House 2 sold the day after we saw it!
